Defining Normality: Psychological Approach

Many of us believe that anyone showing any unusual behavior, different or erratic in anyway is ''abnormal'' or having some mental health issue.

The truth is, normality is derived from word ''norm" that means the socially accepted conditions/behaviors. In other words, normality is popular behavior of a society.

That's why, what's normal in one society might totally be un-acceptable in some other society. Normality is a social construct and keeps changing everywhere.
So, what is abnormality in Psychology? What kind of people really fall in category of mentally disturbed?

Normality, according to Psychology, is the ability to adjust and keep up with everyday challenges of life. It's the ability to heal and resume, to keep living and moving forward. If someone's state of mind is so deranged, the person is unable to continue with the life's goal, daily activities, daily hassles, routine and responsibilities, the person is considered mentally ill, or having mental health issues.

It's impossible for anyone to have a perfect state of mind, to be motivated, involved and focused all the time. But the main focus of Psychology is to help a person identify and strive for paths through which the way out of dilemma is seen.

So, as long as someone is struggling, surviving, using any strategy to keep going in life; even though they have a tendency or a predisposition of developing a mental disorder, they, too, shall be considered normal. However, such people need to keep an update of their thought pattern just like a diabetic patient keeps check of their blood sugar. Such people need care, alot of love, alot of affection, acceptance and understanding.
